The Untold Story of the SS Virginia City Victory

American Merchant Marine Magazine, Winter 2016-2017

Ned Forney is a writer living in Seoul, South Korea. He is currently working on a non-fiction book about North Korean refugees who were rescued from Hungnam, North Korea, during a little-known US humanitarian operation in December of 1950.

With the support of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA), the Korean War Legacy Foundation, and the Heungnam Evacuation Memorial Committee, Ned has interviewed 30 of these former refugees and weaves their dramatic, terror-filled, and often tragic stories into the larger untold saga of the Hungnam Evacuation - the largest US military amphibious evacuation of civilians, under combat conditions, in American history.

Over 92,000 refugees were saved during the 15-day operation, and it is estimated that nearly a million descendants of those rescued now live in freedom in South Korea, the United States, and throughout the world.

Before moving to Korea, Ned worked as a high-school teacher and administrator in the US, Egypt, Dubai, and China. He has written numerous articles on international relations, Korea, and the Hungnam Evacuation and frequently gives presentations and lectures on the evacuation, 20th century Korean history, and leadership.

Ned is a former US Marine and the grandson of Edward H. Forney, a Marine Colonel during the Korean War, who served as the “Evacuation Control Officer” at Hungnam.
