{"id":1090,"date":"2017-10-24T08:58:26","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T23:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/?p=1090"},"modified":"2018-03-04T21:35:44","modified_gmt":"2018-03-04T12:35:44","slug":"ever-been-to-a-skygarden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nedforney.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/24\/ever-been-to-a-skygarden\/","title":{"rendered":"Ever Been to a Skygarden?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Sky-Garden-2.jpg\" alt=\"trees, plants and flowers on the walkway\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Until this morning if anyone had asked me, \u201cHave you ever been to a skygarden?&#8221; the answer would have been a quizzical, \u201cDon\u2019t think so,&#8221; followed by, \u201cWhat\u2019s a skygarden?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now I know.<\/p>\n<p>Today, as I walked around downtown Seoul on a crisp, clear, October morning, I experienced Seoul\u2019s new &#8211; it opened just a few months ago &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/seoullo7017.seoul.go.kr\/SSF\/GLO\/ENG\/M000.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seoullo 7017<\/a>, an elevated garden, urban nursery, and park.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle overpass, built to alleviate Seoul\u2019s burgeoning traffic problems in the 1970\u2019s, was recently transformed into a walkway where tourists hoping to take the perfect picture, families wanting to enjoy time with their children, or office workers needing a respite from their boss can get a break from the realities of big city life, if even for a brief 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1093\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1093\" src=\"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Skygarden-3.jpg\" alt=\"view of Seoul Station\" width=\"640\" height=\"381\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Views from the walkway are spectacular. The iconic Seoul Station, built in the 1920\u2019s by the Japanese during their occupation of Korea, is one of the highlights (Photo credit: Ned Forney)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The creative and environmentally friendly path is a refreshing reminder of how city governments around the world are trying to improve the quality of life for their citizens. It&#8217;s similar to New York City\u2019s High Line, an elevated freight rail line converted into a park that runs\u00a0through Manhattan\u2019s West Side.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mvrdv.nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MVRDV<\/a>,\u00a0an innovative, award-winning Dutch architectural firm, Seoullo 7017 (it&#8217;s name comes from the year the vehicle overpass was built and the year it became a pedestrian park) &#8220;preserves history and revitalizes underdeveloped areas of the city,\u201d according to a ROK government\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitseoul.net\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I agree.
