(Photo credit: Ned Forney)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always fun to write a piece for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www2\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Korea Times<\/a>, and when I was asked to contribute my views on Trump\u2019s upcoming visit I jumped on the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>As I\u00a0point out in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/opinion\/2017\/11\/197_238811.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my article<\/a> below, the ROK-US alliance is strong &#8211; and getting stronger.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea and the United States have agreed to increase their military spending and joint exercises. They have also invested billions of dollars in a shared vision of mutual defense and preparedness: the recently-opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/humphreys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camp Humphreys<\/a>. Located about 45 miles south of Seoul, the US Army\u2019s \u201cflagship\u201d installation is one of America\u2019s largest overseas bases. With a price tag of over $14 billion \u2013 paid in large part by the South Korean government \u2013 Camp Humphreys, a 3,500-acre complex with more than 500 buildings, has become a symbol of the US-ROK alliance. It will eventually be home to some 28,000 servicemen and women and their families.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1160\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1160\" src=\"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Camp-Humphreys.jpg\" alt=\"Camp Humphreys\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camp Humphreys, July 2017. (Photo credit: Kim Jeong-hyo, staff photographer at hani.co.kr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in don\u2019t agree on everything &#8211; KORUS FTA, THAAD, and the OPCON transfer to name a few &#8211; they will hopefully come to\u00a0a resolution or reach a compromise on these issues.\u00a0Nothing will get finalized over the next 48 hours, but Trump and Moon\u2019s time together, and their willingness to listen and empathize with one another, will be crucial to a successful summit and our continued alliance.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s first stop in South Korea will be Camp Humphreys. He\u2019ll be the first US president to visit the base. On his second and last day of his state visit, he\u2019ll make a speech at the ROK&#8217;s National Assembly and attend a ceremony at <a href=\"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/index.php\/2017\/06\/06\/june-6-a-day-to-remember\/\">Seoul National Cemetery<\/a> (similar to Arlington National Cemetery in the US).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s going to be a busy week in Seoul.
