{"id":952,"date":"2017-09-24T10:23:03","date_gmt":"2017-09-24T01:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/?p=952"},"modified":"2017-10-01T21:53:54","modified_gmt":"2017-10-01T12:53:54","slug":"kyung-hee-university-and-the-36th-un-international-day-of-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nedforney.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/24\/kyung-hee-university-and-the-36th-un-international-day-of-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyung Hee University and the 36th UN International Day of Peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kyung-Hee-7.jpg\" alt=\"Kyung Hee University\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Thirty-six years ago &#8211; while Americans flocked to the theater to see the first \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark,&#8221; Prince Charles and Lady Diana married, Hosni Mubarak became president of Egypt, and\u00a0I struggled through my senior year in high school\u00a0&#8211; Kyung Hee University made an historic proposal to the United Nations. The university, located in Seoul, South Korea, requested that an International Day of Peace be established.\u00a0It was a novel idea and gained widespread attention in the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>On November 30, 1981, a UN resolution proclaimed that every third Tuesday in September would be \u201cInternational Day of Peace\u201d (since then the date has moved to September 21), a day to \u201ccommemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With today\u2019s ominous headlines, YouTube feeds, and social media posts highlighting the world\u2019s crises, confrontations, and potential conflicts, it\u2019s easy to be cynical. What can a day set aside to promote international peace really accomplish, after all?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_962\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-962\" src=\"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kyung-Hee-9.jpg\" alt=\"Kyung Hee University fountain\" width=\"640\" height=\"438\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kyung Hee University campus<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As I walked around Kyung Hee\u2019s beautiful, wooded campus yesterday during its annual Peace Festival &#8211; an event started in 1982 to create awareness of the Day of Peace &#8211; and listened to invited speakers and guests discuss the need to end armed conflicts and suffering, it reminded me that talking about, even just contemplating, the ideals of non-violence,\u00a0harmony,\u00a0and international collaboration is important.<\/p>\n<p>If we don\u2019t take time to think about and plan for the things we want or need, nothing will change. From the current refugee crisis, to global health care issues, to regional conflicts, the international community needs innovative problems solvers. Maybe a student at Kyung Hee University will be one of them.<\/p>\n<p>And then I saw the university&#8217;s exhibit on Vaclav Havel.<\/p>\n<p>Displayed prominently at the festival\u2019s entrance, the poster-size placards on the late writer, dissident, and Czech Republic president filled the Grand Peace Hall lobby. With titles like \u201cConsciousness Precedes Being,\u201d \u201cThe Meaning of Culture,\u201d \u201cA Sense of Eternity,\u201d and alarmingly, \u201cThe Threat of Collective Hatred,\u201d and \u201cThe Danger of New Dictatorships,\u201d the placards reminded me again of the importance of sharing ideas and having discussions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_956\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-956\" src=\"http:\/\/nedforney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Kyung-Hee-4.jpg\" alt=\"Grand Peace Hall Lobby Kyung Hee\" width=\"640\" height=\"461\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhibit honoring Vaclav Havel at entrance to the Grand Peace Hall Lobby, Kyung Hee University<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Havel, one of the great thinkers and leaders of the late 20th century, was an intellectual. Before speaking, he analyzed and evaluated his passionate, visionary, and courageous words. When he finally took action, people followed. \u00a0The Czech Republic, Eastern Europe, and the world reaped the benefits of his unique leadership style and political philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Playing a crucial role in the former Czechoslovakia\u2019s \u201cVelvet Revolution\u201d &#8211; the non-violent overthrow of the country\u2019s communist government in late 1989 &#8211; Havel helped create an environment where dissenting citizens peacefully\u00a0eliminated\u00a0an oppressive one-party system, replacing it with democracy. Thousands of lives were probably saved in the process.<\/p>\n<p>For many of us who remember the 1980\u2019s, today\u2019s world seems more complicated and dangerous than it was back then. But are we just being nostalgic? Are things really worse than\u00a0before or is history simply repeating itself?
